What is a wet batch plant?

A wet batch plant makes concrete and discharges it finished. Aggregate, sand, cement and water are weighed into a central mixer inside the plant, mixed there, and what comes out the other side is concrete ready to place.

That is the whole difference from a dry batch plant, which weighs the same dry materials and drops them into a mixer truck — the truck then does the mixing on the drive to the pour. A wet plant does the mixing itself, so what leaves it is concrete, not ingredients. Which means it does not need a mixer truck to make the product at all: it can discharge into a buggy, a pump, a dumper or a small transport unit. It is the plant you buy when the concrete has to be made where it gets used.

Why produce your own concrete

Contractors buy a plant for one of five reasons, and usually more than one:

• No minimum-load charges — ready-mix is priced around full loads, and small pours carry a short-load surcharge. When you make it yourself, a one-yard pour costs one yard.
• You pour on your schedule — not in the delivery window a dispatcher gives you, and with no waiting time on a truck that is late or early.
• Remote work becomes possible — ready-mix has a working life (ASTM C94 limits a load to roughly 90 minutes or 300 drum revolutions). If the haul to your site is longer than that, no supplier can deliver you sound concrete at any price. A plant on site removes the clock.
• You own the mix — the design, the slump, the admixtures. If your work is to a spec, that control is worth more than the savings.
• It can sell — a plant with spare capacity turns into a revenue line supplying other contractors in a market that ready-mix does not serve well.

The trade is that you are now the producer: you buy the materials, you own the quality, and someone has to run it. For most contractors doing regular small-to-mid pours, that trade is clearly worth making. For someone pouring twice a year, it is not.

Sizing a wet batch plant

Two numbers decide it, and they answer different questions. Batch size (1.3 to 4 cubic yards here) sets how fast you can pour. Aggregate storage (up to 24 yards across two bins) sets how long you run before a loader has to feed the plant again.

• 1.3+ cu yd — small pours, precast, repair and patch work, remote crews. The plant that replaces the short-load fee.
• 2.5 cu yd — the working contractor's plant. Enough to keep a crew placing without the plant becoming the bottleneck.
• 4 cu yd — production. Continuous pours, or supplying concrete to others.

The other real decision is automated or manual. Computer weight batching gives you repeatable mix designs and a printable batch record, which stops mattering the moment you are selling concrete or working to a spec — because then it is not a convenience, it is your evidence. Manual batching costs less and is perfectly sound if you are pouring your own work to a mix you already know. Do not pay for automation you will not use; do not skip it if a customer will ever ask what went into the load.

Financing a wet batch plant

Concrete equipment is a textbook financing case: it is a hard asset that holds its value, so the machine carries much of the credit decision itself rather than resting entirely on your balance sheet.
